This one-day, in-person free workshop at the RAND Corporation in Arlington, Virginia, on Aug. 29 will give journalists access to and information from some of the nation’s leading climate change analysts.

RAND — a nonprofit, nonpartisan global research organization that tackles the world’s toughest problems — is sponsoring this training in partnership with Poynter to advance journalists’ understanding of climate change using the most reliable and scientifically accurate information available today.

The sessions will include lectures and group discussions, as well as breakout sessions and opportunities to connect one-on-one with RAND policy experts.

Speakers include Benjamin Preston, senior policy researcher and director of community health and environmental policy program; and Aimee E. Curtright, senior scientist. Both are professors at the Pardee RAND Graduate School.

Lunch, coffee and snacks will be provided, and parking is free. (More information on parking and directions will be provided after registration.)

Tuesday, Aug. 29

9 a.m.: Welcome and introductions

9:30-10:30 a.m.: Setting the record straight on climate science

Research now has a better handle on the pace of climate change and the role of human activity. Here, we’ll assess the quality of research, review the latest findings, dismiss distractions and clarify concepts.

10:30-11:15 a.m.: New technology to reduce carbon emissions

An overview of changing wind and solar technologies, the move away from fossil fuel, the state of carbon capture and sequestration technology, and the challenges and opportunities presented by hydrogen fuel.

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Assessing decarbonization policy

An overview of the Infrastructure Investment and American Jobs Act (IIJA) and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the two main drivers of energy transition.

12:30-1:30 p.m.: Lunch

1:30-2:30 p.m.: Tools of the trade

Get a guided tour through the variety of web tools available to explore the impacts and mitigation of climate change.

Break

2:45-4 p.m.: The road to Justice40

The administration has set the goal that 40% of clean energy benefits go to disadvantaged communities. What policy and monitoring tools are in place, and how well can benefits be targeted?

4:30-5 p.m.: Wrapping it all up

5 p.m.: Happy hour (location TBD)

This training is designed for any journalist, but particularly early- to mid-career journalists, who live and/or work in Washington, D.C., and who want to improve their knowledge of climate change issues.

The process to register is straightforward and simple. Please be prepared to answer questions about your professional experience, areas of interest and basic demographic information.

This is a free training. Travel assistance is not provided.
